Does Your Hair Need an Intervention?

Mine did – and the Joico 4 Step Treatment was there for it.

Let’s take it from the top. You haven’t seen my natural hair around here for a while. I got the wigs for multiple reasons, however at the top I guess was the fact that my hair was thinning and that it needed a break (and a real intervention). The fact that bulimia and intense bleaching don’t go well hand in hand is no groundbreaking news for anyone. I knew that myself, however I really, really wanted pastel pink hair and nothing could stop me in my stubbornness. There’s no blame to pass on anyone but me. I knew my hair was falling out in clumps as a side effect of me having been bulimic, however I pushed and pushed until I got the desired colour. I got the colour done by the best hairstylists, using top notch products, so it’s definitely not on them, it’s on the fact that I couldn’t accept that my hair was in no condition to be bathed in bleach at that time. I’m not sure if my hair would’ve gotten along better with the bleaching at some other point, but I also have the hunch that bleaching is not for me.

The result of my stubbornness was that I was left with around 47 hairs on my head. I stopped dying it all together, only dyed it 4 months after the last bleaching to go back to my natural colour. I spent one year taking extreme care of my hair – no dyeing, no heat tools, I didn’t even use a blow dryer. It slowly started coming back to life and a couple of months back, when I felt that my hair could take it, I went back to red. Pink is still my favourite colour ever, however red is so much more me than my natural.

I like to create stories and characters in my images – and that’s kind of hard to do when your hair is not part of the story. My hair has always been frizzy and kind of hard to style anyway – so why burn it out with a million heat tools when I can just slap on a wig and look fabulous?

My hair is no longer falling, it’s no longer dry. It’s still thin – but it takes years for your hair to recover from bulimia, so I am being patient. However, I can officially say that it’s healthy.

During these years in which I’ve tried desperately to bring my hair back to life, I tried a million products. Ok, maybe not a million, but a couple dozens for sure. Out of all, the line that I feel I need to write about the most is the Joico 4 Step Treatment. What’s that, amirite? It’s a treatment that contains 4 hair products (kind of obvious, Patricia, we’re not idiots).

Each product has a specific purpose, in order to reach the final, ultimate & glorious goal: healthy hair.

Shall we?

1. The Clarifying Shampoo

It is a deep cleansing shampoo – it cleans the hair & scalp of all products (whether we’re talking styling or the byproducts of our lifestyle, such as dust, dirt, you know it), without stripping the hair of moisture. A lot of the shampoos I used that left my hair feeling super clean, also made it really tangly and dry – and that is the magic of this one. It gives you a totally clean slate, without sucking the life out of your hair.

2. The Cuticle Sealer

The second step of the treatment is meant to seal your hair’s cuticles (duuh), a slightly acidic compound intended to restore the natural pH level of the hair. It locks in moisture and delivers smoothness to the hair.

3. The Deep Penetrating Reconstructor

The reconstructor contains a high concentration of protein, which helps rebuild & revive damaged hair from within. It’s banana scented (which I personally hate), however the results are most definitely worth breathing through your mouth for a while. It says to leave it on for 5 minutes, but I love turning this treatment into a home spa kind of thing, so I leave this and the 4th step in for around 15 minutes.

4. The Intense Hydrator

The master of the intervention, if I may. This thing is the glass of water a dying man need in the desert. By glass of water meaning moisture and by dying man meaning your dry ass hair. Or mine. Or hers. But, really, the way my hair feels after rinsing it out… I’ve never felt it so soft ever before.

That is the general conclusion: softness. But not only. Also shine, elasticity, there’s not longer a hundred tiny falloffs when you brush your hair (because your hair no longer breaks from the tips). I use the treatment once a week and the small sized bottles last for more than 8 months. Yes, it’s not the cheapest treatment out there. But your hair’s health is worth more than that, right? If you don’t feel like committing from the start, try it out at a salon. That’s how I discovered it and I swear I did not know my hair actually could be that soft.

The feeling I get after every single time I use it, drying my hair feels like the Christmas morning. It might sound like I’m exaggerating, but I have never, ever, ever heard or seen a negative review of this stuff. It really is incredible – and the fact that you can buy it online and no longer only find it in salons is even better. I got mine from Toplineshop.ro, however you can also find it in their physical shop.

So, how’s your hair feeling today?
